Preparing your workspace for the Fuse 1 generation ecosystem

Preparing your workspace for the Fuse 1 generation ecosystem

Before receiving your printer and powder recovery station, prepare a space to install and operate your Fuse 1 generation printer, Fuse Sift, and Fuse Blast and to house the necessary accessories and consumables.

Read and understand the instructions manuals and their safety instructions before using the Fuse 1 generation printer or Fuse Sift.

If your product has any visible shipping damage upon delivery, add a note to the shipping receipt or bill of lading. Contact Formlabs Support or your certified service provider and provide photos of the damage, both to the unopened package and its contents.

Footprints

The Fuse 1, Fuse 1+ 30W, Fuse Sift, Fuse Blast, printer’s stand, build chamber, vacuum, and powder cartridge are free standing components.

Reserve the following minimum dimensions for the most convenient access:

  • Fuse 1 or Fuse 1+ 30W: 149.5 × 125.5 × 187.0 cm (59.0 × 49.4 × 73.6 in)
    • The printer footprint is 68.5 × 64.5 × 107.0 cm (27.0 × 25.4 × 42.0 in), 165.5 cm (65.0 in) with stand. Leave at least 20.0 cm (8.0 in) to the left of the printer and 61.0 cm (24.0 in) to the front and right of the printer free for access.
    • Place the printer at least 20.0 cm (8.0 in) from nearby walls.
  • Fuse Sift: 221.1 × 122.0 × 218.0 cm (87.1 × 48.0 × 85.8 in)
    • The Fuse Sift footprint is 99.1 × 61.0 × 188.8 cm (39.0 × 24.0 × 61.8 in). Leave at least 61 cm (24 in) to the left, front, and right of the unit free for access.
    • Place the Fuse Sift at least 20.0 cm (8.0 in) from nearby walls.
    • Do not overlap with the printer access footprint by more than 30.5 cm (12.0 in).

  • Fuse Blast: 145 × 150 × 175 cm (57.4 × 59.6 × 69 in)
    • The Fuse Blast footprint is 100 × 75 × 175 cm (39 × 29.6 × 68.7 in). Leave at least 76.2 cm (30 in) of clearance around all sides of the machine.

Environs

Consider the following additional requirements:

  • Choose a location separate from any machinery or tooling that generates dust or sparks, such as wood or metal working equipment.
  • Unlike standard media blasting cabinets, the Fuse Blast can share a space with the Fuse 1 generation printer or Fuse Sift without risk of media contamination. If you are using another blasting cabinet, place your media blasting tools in a separate room away from the printer and powder recovery system to prevent powder contamination and potential print failures. If you cannot move the media blaster into its own workspace, position any media blasting tools as far away from the printer and Fuse Sift as possible to prevent media blasting particles from contaminating your powder supply.
  • Maintain low ambient humidity. When printing with Nylon 12, keep the relative humidity of the environment around the printer, the Fuse Sift and other post-processing tools, and anywhere unsintered powder is stored to 50% or less at all times. Higher humidity will lead to clumping, under-dosing, and print failures. If 50% RH cannot be achieved, remove the debris catcher at the bottom of the printer’s hopper (though this will remove protection against debris entering the print chamber). For SLS powders, humidity affects shelf life significantly. For optimal results, follow Formlabs guidelines for storing and handling powder.
  • Maintain an ambient temperature of 18–28 ºC (64–84 ºF) with an HVA/C system that actively moves air into and out of the space 24/7.
  • Fuse 1+ 30W only: Invest in an external nitrogen source if inert atmospheric control is desired. Fuse 1+ 30W printers can print with an inert gas atmosphere but cannot generate nitrogen.
  • Fuse Blast only: Ensure you have a source of compressed air that meets the machine’s requirements. For more information, see the support article Setting up a compressed air supply for the Fuse Blast.

Caution:

Sintering nylon powder produces laurolactam; a white powder that accumulates within the print enclosure, filter mediums, and exhaust. Proper ventilation is required whenever the printer, Fuse Sift, or Fuse Blast is operating.

功率要求

Notice:

Fuse 1 generation printers and the Fuse Sift each require a dedicated AC circuit, providing at least 7.5 A at 230 VAC (EU) or 15 A at 120 VAC (US), as well as reliable grounding. These circuits must be separate from other devices, including fans, vacuums, power tools, space heaters, or any large appliances or power tools. Power surges may disrupt prints and/or permanently damage sensitive components, jeopardizing the reliability of the product. Formlabs suggests the use of line conditioners or UPS in regions with voltage fluctuations.

  • NA: 120 V and at least 15 A, Type NEMA 5-20R socket
  • EU: 230 V and at least 7.5 A, Type CEE 7/3 "Schuko" socket
    • If your vacuum draws more than 6 A, your Fuse Sift needs an independent circuit supplying 230 V and 10 A to a Type CEE 7/3 "Schuko" socket.
  • UK: 230 V and 13 A, Type G BS 1363 socket

The Fuse Sift requires an AC circuit capable of powering both the Fuse Sift and the third-party vacuum. Consult the manuals for both units and follow all relevant electrical codes. When connecting a vacuum to the Fuse Sift, use a vacuum that draws 14 A or less to prevent damage to the unit.

The Fuse Blast requires an AC circuit providing at least 3 A at 230 VAC (EU) or 6 A at 120 VAC (US). The circuit does not have to be dedicated to the unit, but it cannot share a circuit with a Fuse 1 generation printer or Fuse Sift.

联网要求

Two RJ-45 Ethernet LAN ports or a WPA2 Wi-Fi network that provides send and receive access to ports UDP 9993 and HTTPS 443, as well as api.formlabs.com. For more information, refer to the support article Connecting a Fuse 1 generation printer, Fuse Sift, or Fuse Blast via USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi.

其他用品

Aside from the contents of the Fuse 1 and Fuse Sift package, you need additional supplies to post-process your printed parts and to clean and maintain the printer and powder recovery station.

Prepare your workspace by purchasing them in advance:

  • Alconox cleaning agent
  • Compliant vacuum that is grounded and approved for dust collection (e.g., Class II, Division 2 vacuum)
  • Abrasive blasting cabinet (optional)
  • Distilled water
  • Ethanol (laboratory-grade)
  • PEC*PADs (disposable lint-free microfiber cloths)
  • Polyester cloth swabs (disposable lint-free polyester cloth swabs with either orange or blue plastic handles)
  • Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) based on the safety data sheets for the materials you plan to use
  • Blasting media (200–300 µm for best media filtering performance)

You can adapt your own compliant vacuum to connect to the Fuse Sift, provided its power draw does not exceed what the Fuse Sift can deliver.

  • 120 V: Use a vacuum that draws 14 A or less to prevent damage to the unit.
  • 230 V: Use a vacuum that draws 6 A or less to avoid additional power requirements for the Fuse Sift. If your vacuum draws more than 6 A, your Fuse Sift needs an independent circuit supplying 230 V and 10 A.

For your reference:

  • The North America 120 V Fuse Sift vacuum adapter cable is 14AWG 3C.
  • The EU 230 V Fuse Sift vacuum adapter cable is H05VV-F 3G1.5mm2.

One end of the cable needs to terminate in a IEC 320 C20 plug to connect to the Fuse Sift. The other should terminate in whatever socket is required to connect to your vacuum.
